Balance rehabilitation

What is Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo (BPPV)?
This is a common inner ear balance disorder. It typically gives you short, intense spells of dizziness when you move your head into specific positions (often lying down, rolling over or looking up).

The condition is caused by crystals in the fluid within the balance organ in the ear. These can occur following a head trauma or inner ear infection, or they may occur with no known cause. The crystals cause your ear(s) to respond to head movement or gravity in an abnormal way.

Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo (BPPV) is treated using physical manoeuvres. This involves the healthcare specialist slowly rotating the patient’s head whilst the patient is lying down. This treatment is successful on the first occasion for around 80% of people but may need to be repeated to fully relieve the symptoms.
